Finally Bhutan, a tiny Himalayan kingdom between China and India, is ready to host the 16th SAARC( South Asian Association for the Regional Co-operation) Summit next year in its capital, Thimpu, for the first time since this regional fraternity was established in 1985 in Bangladesh, according to Kuenselonline, the daily news site. Prime minister, Jigmi Y Thinley has proposed the dates of the event as April 28 and 29, 2010 which is yet to be confirmed by other member nations.
SAARC summit is the conference of the high level officials,State/government heads of the eight member nations viz. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan and Afghanistan-the new member nation that formally assumed its rightful place as a member of this Regional Association in 2007.
Though it was Maldives’ turn to host the conference this time but at the request of Bhutan, the Council of Foreign Ministers agreed to give this opportunity to it instead. Interestingly, Bhutan, citing its poor physical infrastructures and other technical problems, had shown reluctance to hold this conference three times in the past. 15th Summit of the SAARC was held in Sri Lanka, last year.
“We are now prepared in terms of the administration, infrastructure and the foreign ministry being ready to host the summit,” Kuenselonline has quoted Prime minister as saying. This online daily says that Bhutan is going to discuss with the leaders of the member nations on issues of mutual interest and the like in this upcoming summit.
Bhutan has decades long political problem. The problem emerged in 1990 as a consequence of its ethnic cleansing’ policy against its Nepali ethnic minority citizens who have been languishing in Nepal in different refugee camps for about 19 years now. Following this latest news of hosting the regional level conference next year by this isolated dragon country, its desolated citizens here in Nepal have been optimistic that their issue would be brought forth and a durable conclusion would be found which finally would open the doors of their repatriation and rebuilding of Human rights in Bhutan.
