Bhutanese in Massachusetts celebrate Dashain festival.

The resettled Bhutanese Families in the cities of Westfield, West Springfield and Springfield in the State of Massachusetts have organized a get together program on 27th September,2009 (Maha Nawami) to mark the great Hindu festival of Dashain. The program was organized to give opportunity to all the resettled families in and around the cities to meet their relatives and friends and exchange their words of best wishes for a wonderful Dashain.
Emceed by Bhuwan Gautam, another resettled Bhutanese in Springfield,MA the program saw a congregation of around 200 Bhutanese from about 45 different families.A few local journalists, social activists and some foreigners were among others.

Welcoming the community folks and the guests at the program, Hari Khanal, the chairman of the BTM(Bhutanese Trust of Massachusetts) highlighted the importance of Festivals like Dashain and Tihar. Here are a few photos that we received from Mr. Hari Khanal.

  1. Mr. Hari Khanal has reported that
“A few local journalists, social activists and some foreigners were among others”.(who attended the meeting). I wonder who were those foreigners? To the best of knowledge, some local residants (Americans) attended the meeting, two of them were Mrs. Karen Novak and Nancy, but we cannot call them foreigners. Probably Mr. Hari Khanal made a mistake by referring them as foreigners, because foreigners means those people who come from other country, and these people live here, they were born here and they are Americans. I was unable to attend this meeting but I was near this area and was in a close contact with many people who attended this meeting. I hope next meeting will be much more organized, and will be held in some large building like a rental hall or something. Mr. Hari Khnnal of Springfield, Mr. Hari Ghorshi of Westfield, Mr. Koirala of West Springfield and other leaders surley will have my cooperation.

  2. We rely in our culture and not let them lost.Despite of some obstacles, the programme was held which really send a positive feelings and stubborness to every bhutanese.I think it was a good example to other society about having some best qualifications to be shown.Coz we know america is a world of different cultures with different societies who lives harmoniously.
Hopefully this type of programme gives a sense of rememberance and an opportunity to share cultural values .I hope it unites all the bhutanese nearby and an abroad and make their own kind of effect in the society.

  3. I suggest Bhutanese and Nepalese community members need to get more organized. They also need to inform local media ahead of time about any upcoming get together community meetings. Last time it was “Refugee Day” and now it was 27th September,2009 (Maha Nawami) to mark the great Hindu festival of Dashain. On both occasions, local media was not informed and that is why no coverage was given in the local media. On”Refugees Day”, I called local TV stations and newspapers office to inform of the get together program, but while they reporters were on their way to the meeting to cover the programe, it was cancelled few hours earlier. Local newspapers and TV stations reporters were very unhappy about that early end of that programe. This time, it was scheduled to be held in Stanley Park, Westfield, Massacusetts, but suddenly it was annunced that it would be held in West Springfield at the house of Mr. Koridala.
I believe Nepalese/Bhutanese people are very nice and I am sure they will do better next time.
