Nov.29 – Bhutan was defeated by Nepal in a friendly football practice match played between the national teams of these two South Asian countries at Mohammedan Sporting Club, Kolkata on Sunday, the 28th Nov.
Though both sides strove to lead their rivals, yet, no scores were made in the first half. But early in the second half, Bhutan fortunately got a chance of spot-kick when Nepalese mid fielder, Bijay Rai,fouled at the D box. Avaling of the opportunity, Pasang Tshering turned his kick fruitful keeping his team one point ahead. But, in no time the Nepalese winger and a popular football icon of Nepal, Anil Gurung,making good use of defender Biraj Maharjan’s pass,kicked the ball that ultimately kissed the net, unhindered, thereby shattering Bhutan’s dream of defeating Nepal.
In the 80th minute,Nepalese mid fielder, Bijay Rai, whose foul earlier had made his team lose a point to Bhutan,scored from the penalty area turning his team victorious against the Bhutanese team.
National Footbal teams of all the eight South Asian nations are currently in Kolkata to play the series of friendly matches as a preparation for the upcoming SAFF Championship which is going to be held in Dhaka from December 4 to 14.
The Bhutanese National team is playing on the first day of the SAAF Championship against the host country in Dhaka at 18:45BST(Bangladesh Standard Time).
Though the National football team existed since 1970s, Bhutan joined the FIFA only in the year 2000. In 2008 SAFF Championship that was co-hosted by Srilanka and Maldives, Bhutan had played the semi final against its neighbor, India but was defeated with 1-2 score.
