Dec.06.Bhutan got a shameful blow from Sri-Lanka in a group B match of the 6th SAFF Championship at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka today. This Island nation of South Asia, despite having being experienced hurdle in their team set, managed to march ahead to knock the door of the sem-final beating Bhutan 6-0. With this abashing defeat, Bhutan is literally knocked out of the tournament. Though they still have one more match on Dec. 08 with Pakistan, but it’s not going to bring any difference even if they win.
Bhutan didn’t only pave way for their opponent towards semi-final on Sunday but also irked their hundreds of supporters by not harvesting the chances they’d gotten during the match. Bhutanese striker, Nawang Dhendup, mid-fielder,Pasang Chhering, most popular scorer, Gyltshen and a few others in the squad had got good chances which they could end them up in goals, but failed. Their panicking began as early as the eighth minute when the Lankan striker, Ediri Chana, making a very good use of the throw pass of Sanjiv, slammed the ball into the net. Yet, with a gleam hope, they kept attacking until the 24th minute when Chana scored his second goal against Bhutan further widening the margin.
Bhutan saw their dreams completely ruined just 5 minutes before the halftime when Jayasurya, the opponent striker, discreetly managed to blow them with the third score of the match.
The game turned visibly horrible in the second half though Bhutan changed their strategy. Two more shots from Jayasurya and one from Chathura was more than enough for these hapless boys from the Himalayan nation to pack up and board the Druk Air sacking up their colorful dreams.(Tilak Poudel)
